Weak rules have allowed industrial mega-dairies across Oregon to push family farmers off the land, pollute our air and water, and threaten animal welfare. Senate Bill 103 would place a moratorium on new and expanded mega-dairies until Oregon acts to protect its communities and special places.

A few months ago, Oregon residents helped convince Governor Kate Brown to revoke the permit for the polluting Lost Valley Farms mega-dairy — a large dairy operation that left cows standing in puddles of their own waste.

The industry and officials at the Oregon Department of Agriculture want us to think that what happened at Lost Valley Farms was an isolated incident. That’s simply not true. Lost Valley is an example of the inherent dangers of factory farms that are “too big to fail” and capable of causing catastrophic harms.

Mega-dairies aren’t consistent with the kind of state most Oregonians want — one that values and maintains family farms, vibrant rural communities and a healthy environment. Allowing mega-dairies to expand across our state prioritizes short-term corporate profits over these long-held values.

Mega-dairies simply do not belong in Oregon. Please support Senate Bill 103 to place a moratorium on new and expanded mega-dairies until Oregon acts to protect its communities and special places.
