Protect Organic Farms From Fracking NOW!
I urge the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) and the USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP) to add the impact of fossil fuel extraction and infrastructure on organic farms as a topic on the NOSB's Work Agenda.
Organic farms are unique and the land where organic food is produced warrants special protection. But fracking, oil drilling, oil and gas pipelines, frack sand mining and other energy infrastructure can damage farmland or use chemicals that could cause the farms to lose their organic certification.
To maintain the integrity of organic food, we need the NOSB and NOP to weigh in on this issue. A good place to start is sharing instructions with certifiers about the use of Organic Agriculture Impact Mitigation Plans that farmers can use to protect themselves.
