Shut Down Valley Generating Station NOW!

Nearly five years after suffering through the largest methane gas leak in the country, Los Angeles residents have been impacted by yet another major methane leak!

LADWP Board of Commissioners have recently confirmed that the Valley Generating power station in Sun Valley has been leaking methane – an explosive greenhouse gas – since at least September 2019.

What's worse? The L.A. Dept. of Water and Power (LADWP) have known about the leak for at least an entire year, doing nothing to inform or protect the public.

We're demanding that L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti and City Council act immediately to shut down Valley Generating Station until it is safe for communties!

I urge you to immediately to shut down Valley Generating Station until it is safe for communities!

This demand comes out of urgent concern for the health and safety of Sun Valley residents. Not only does methane accelerate the climate crisis by being 84x more potent that CO2 and further set us back on our climate goals, but it also has the potential to trigger adverse physical symptoms, like chronic headaches and nosebleeds, and can lead to serious health problems like cancer and birth defects.

The discovery of the methane leak at Valley Generating Station also comes amid the ongoing fight by residents, community leaders, activists and some city and state officials to shut down the nearby Aliso Canyon gas storage facility, site of the worst methane gas leak in U.S. history. There, scores of residents complained for years of serious health effects related to the leak, and to this day they suffer with symptoms.

There was inadequate action to protect residents back then and we refuse to have our healthy and safety dismissed yet again! Residents deserve to be informed on what is polluting the air they breathe, at what rate, and how it will impact them.

We simply do not have the privilege to wait for another disaster. I demand the immediate shut down the Valley Generating Station — fix the methane leak NOW!
