It’s been nearly four years since Governor Newsom directed the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to expedite the closure of the Aliso Canyon storage facility.

But now the CPUC is considering a proposal by SoCalGas to increase gas storage at Aliso Canyon to its maximum capacity.

A gas increase at Aliso Canyon would increase SoCalGas’s wealth at the expense of public health. The community living near this dangerous facility is still suffering the aftermath of the largest methane gas blowout in United States history.

Take action before the vote on August 31: Tell Governor Newsom and his appointed CPUC to protect the safety of Los Angeles residents by rejecting any attempts by SoCalGas to increase storage limits at Aliso Canyon and expediting the closure of the facility.

Dear Governor Newsom and California Public Utilities Commission,

I urge you to keep your promise to shut down Aliso Canyon and call for the rejection of the application from Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) to increase storage limits on Aliso Canyon.

When you took office as Governor, you ordered the CPUC to expedite the closure of Aliso Canyon faster than Governor Brown’s proposed closure date of 2027, yet the CPUC has yet to commit to a definite timeline towards shutting down this dangerous facility that continues to poison the communities of the San Fernando Valley.

Aliso Canyon is not needed to meet our energy needs. The state successfully adopted mitigation efforts after the blowout. For two years after the blowout, Aliso Canyon was under strict regulations and withdrawals were not permitted unless in the case of an emergency. During that time, the Southern California region did not face blackouts or gas supply shortages as a result of Aliso Canyon being offline.

SoCalGas is falsely claiming that an increase in gas storage capacity is intended to protect ratepayers. After failing to properly manage their record high gas storage level while taking advantage of the lack of public oversight of energy markets this past winter, it is clear that SoCalGas cannot be trusted to act in good faith to protect their ratepayers.

Whenever withdrawals and activities at Aliso Canyon are ramped up, residents near the facility experience an uptick in symptoms like those during the blowout. The facility continues to leak on a regular basis, multiple times a day. Since SoCalGas resumed operations at the field after the gas blowout, numerous leaks and violations have occurred. These leaks have resulted in increased rates of cancer, respiratory diseases, and other health impacts in the nearby communities. This increased danger at a proven unstable facility is not acceptable.

I urge you to protect the safety of Los Angeles residents by rejecting any attempts by SoCalGas to increase storage limits at Aliso Canyon and expediting the closure of the facility.
